Austrian race: Russell stopped first, built a nine-second cushion, and kept 1.6 seconds of it

Verstappen had closed to 1.4 s when Russell pitted on lap 43. The early stop put him 10.7 s clear; Verstappen and Antonelli, on fresher hards, took back all but 1.611 s and 1.986 s by the flag.

Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix from pole, 1.611 s ahead of Verstappen and 1.986 s ahead of his teammate Antonelli. Three cars inside two seconds after 71 laps sounds like a race decided in the last corner. It was decided on lap 43, when Russell made his second stop before anyone else at the front, and then defended for the next 28 laps on the oldest tyres of the three.

Verstappen came from fifth

Qualifying was tight: the first seven were covered by 0.398 s, with Russell on pole in 1:06.113, Leclerc 0.236 s behind and Hamilton third. Verstappen started fifth and was third by the end of lap 2. Hamilton held second for the first 11 laps but lost ground every lap, from 0.7 s behind Russell after lap 1 to 5.1 s after lap 11, and stopped early, on lap 12. The afternoon was hot and dry: 34 to 35°C air, 49 to 52°C track in our feed.

Verstappen stopped on lap 18, Russell on lap 19. Antonelli ran his mediums to lap 24 and led for five laps, but his stop ended a fraction of a second before the first Virtual Safety Car was deployed, so he paid the full price of it. Hamilton, a lap later, stopped under the VSC. When it was over, Russell led Verstappen by 5.7 s, and Antonelli was fourth.

Sixteen laps of pressure

Both front-runners were on hards, Verstappen's one lap older. Over laps 27 to 42 Verstappen averaged 1:11.662 and Russell 1:11.931, a quarter of a second a lap, and the gap came down from 5.7 s to 1.4 s at the end of lap 42. At that rate the gap would have been gone in about five more laps.

Lap 43: the stop that won it

Russell came in on lap 43, the first of the leading three to make his second stop. Verstappen stayed out six more laps and led them. It was the wrong side of the tyre gap: on laps 45 to 48 Russell, on new hards, lapped in 1:10.860 to 1:11.215, while Verstappen's hards, now 27 to 30 laps old, gave 1:12.356 to 1:12.681. That is 1.3 to 1.7 s a lap. When Verstappen stopped on lap 49 he rejoined 10.7 s behind.

Antonelli went longer still. He led laps 49 to 51 and stopped on lap 51. He left the pit lane 49 s before a second VSC came out: again his stop fell just outside one. He rejoined third, 18.3 s behind Russell. The second VSC was short, 44 s, and only Gasly stopped under it. Our feed records both VSCs but not their causes.

Eighteen laps of closing

When the VSC was over, at the end of lap 53, Russell was 9.0 s ahead of Verstappen and 13.9 s ahead of Antonelli. His hards were six laps older than Verstappen's and eight older than Antonelli's, and the lap times showed it. From lap 54 to the flag Russell averaged 1:11.300, Verstappen 1:10.895 and Antonelli 1:10.634. Verstappen took back about 0.4 s a lap, Antonelli about 0.7 s.

Antonelli set the fastest lap of the race on lap 59, 1:10.374, and the eight fastest laps of the race were all his. It was not enough. Over 18 laps the gaps came down to 1.611 s and 1.986 s, and Russell crossed the line without letting either of them inside 1.6 s. Antonelli finished 0.375 s behind Verstappen.

Ferrari went backwards

Ferrari started second and third and finished eighth and fifth. Leclerc was third for a spell after the first stops but made three, the last on lap 59 for softs, and finished 45.659 s behind. Hamilton also stopped three times and was 26.393 s back. Piastri came the other way, from seventh to fourth on two stops, 21.809 s behind. Four cars retired: Bottas after 2 laps, Pérez after 4, Sainz after 23 and Stroll after 45.

What decided it

Verstappen and Antonelli were both faster than Russell at the end, and the timing data does not hide it. What Russell had was the order of the stops. Going first on lap 43 turned a 1.4 s margin over Verstappen into 10.7 s, and Antonelli's two stops both landed just outside a VSC. Russell led 57 of the 71 laps and needed all but 1.6 s of the nine his stop bought him. See every lap on the lap-by-lap page and Russell's driver page.
