Barcelona race: Hamilton stopped three times and still beat Russell by 19.5 seconds

Russell led 32 laps from pole on two stops. Hamilton took 15.7 s out of him in seven laps on new mediums, made his last stop under a Virtual Safety Car, and was the quicker car to the flag.

Hamilton won the Barcelona Grand Prix from second on the grid, 19.561 s ahead of Russell, with Norris third. On paper it was the harder way to win: Russell, on pole, stopped twice; Hamilton stopped three times. The result came from two things the timing data shows clearly. Hamilton was much faster than Russell when the tyre gap between them was largest, and his extra stop happened to fall under a Virtual Safety Car. There was no full Safety Car.

Same row, different plans

Qualifying split the front row by 0.064 s: Russell 1:14.679, Hamilton 1:14.743. The tyres split them more. Russell started on new mediums. Hamilton started on a used set of softs with two laps already on it. Our feed put the track at 48 to 52°C all afternoon, and the race stayed dry. Hamilton kept second at the start but did not get close: by the end of lap 10 he was 3.5 s behind.

He was the first of the leaders to stop, on lap 11, and switched to hards. Russell answered a lap later. Once Leclerc had made his first stop, Hamilton was second again, 1.8 s behind, and over the next ten laps the gap only grew, to 2.8 s. The early stop had gained him about 1.7 s, not the lead.

Seven laps on mediums

Race trace, laps 21 to 43. Hamilton (solid red) drops to seventh after his lap 27 stop and is leading by lap 38. The hatched band is the first VSC.

The second stop is where the race turned. Hamilton came in on lap 27, took new mediums, and rejoined seventh, 23.3 s behind Russell. Russell's hards were by then 15 laps old. Over laps 29 to 35 Hamilton averaged 1:20.901 a lap; Russell averaged 1:23.153. That is 2.3 s a lap, and by the end of lap 35 the gap was 7.6 s. In seven laps Hamilton had won back most of what his stop had cost.

Russell made his second stop on lap 36 and came out 17.6 s behind Hamilton. Antonelli led for two laps before stopping on lap 37, and from lap 38 to the flag Hamilton led every lap. But he was the only one of the front three still due another stop.

The VSC came 0.1 s after he crossed the line

At the end of lap 39 Hamilton was 16.2 s ahead of Russell. That was not enough for a stop at racing speed: his lap 27 stop had cost him 20.5 s against Russell. Then a Virtual Safety Car was deployed, 0.1 s after Hamilton completed lap 40. He came in at the end of lap 41, while the field was still slowed, and was back on track before the VSC ended. Verstappen, Gasly, Bearman and Pérez also stopped under it.

When racing resumed, Hamilton was 3.0 s ahead of Russell. Across the VSC the stop had cost him 13.2 s, about seven seconds less than a green-flag stop. Our feed records the VSC but not its cause.

Then he was simply faster

The VSC explains why Hamilton came out in front. It does not explain the margin. On laps 43 to 60, both on hards, with Russell's set five laps older, Hamilton averaged 1:20.775 and Russell 1:21.481. Hamilton was 0.7 s a lap quicker, and the gap grew from 3.0 s to 15.7 s. He set the race's fastest lap on lap 44, 1:20.122, and seven of the ten fastest laps of the race were his.

Three cars stopped in two minutes

Antonelli passed Russell for second just after the start of lap 61. A lap later his car stopped on track. A second Virtual Safety Car came out 44 s after that, and within two minutes of Antonelli's stop Bearman and Leclerc, who was running sixth, had stopped as well. All three were still classified, Leclerc 15th, Antonelli 16th and Bearman 17th, because they had covered enough distance. Our data shows when each car stopped, not why.

The VSC ran from lap 63 to lap 65 and changed nothing at the front. Russell got second back and finished 19.561 s behind. Norris was third, 23.719 s back, after starting fourth on the same medium-hard-hard plan as Russell. Verstappen, on a four-stint race that ended on mediums, was fourth, and Piastri fifth.

What decided it

Russell did nothing obviously wrong: pole, 32 laps in the lead, two clean stops. He lost to a car that, on fresher tyres, was 2.3 s a lap faster in the middle of the race and 0.7 s a lap faster at the end on similar ones. The VSC made the three-stop plan cheaper by about seven seconds. Without it, the same stop at racing speed would have put Hamilton back out a few seconds behind Russell with 25 laps to go; that part of the race we cannot replay, only measure.
