Spa race: a Virtual Safety Car gave Leclerc the lead, and Antonelli took it back on track

Antonelli led the first 18 laps from pole. Leclerc stopped two laps later, under a Virtual Safety Car, and ended up 2.1 s ahead of him. Antonelli caught him on hards two laps older, passed him on lap 34 and won by 1.952 s.

Antonelli won the Belgian Grand Prix from pole, 1.952 s ahead of Leclerc, with Verstappen third. It reads as pole to flag, and Antonelli did lead 29 of the 44 laps, but not in one piece. Leclerc led 13 laps and Norris two. The lead changed hands at the pit stops because of where a Virtual Safety Car fell, and Antonelli had to take it back on track.

A Safety Car before the race had settled

Antonelli's pole lap was 1:44.361, 0.317 s quicker than Verstappen. Verstappen got ahead of him early on the opening lap, but Antonelli had the lead back before the lap was done. Further back, Hamilton and Russell made contact at Turn 6. Russell, third on the grid, did not complete a lap, Hamilton was given a five-second penalty for causing the collision, and the Safety Car ran until the end of lap 4. Racing began properly on lap 5 with Antonelli, Leclerc and Verstappen in front.

Eighteen laps in front

Verstappen passed Leclerc for second on lap 6 and was never more than 2.4 s behind the leader: 0.8 s after lap 6, 2.3 s after lap 16. He was the first of the leaders to stop, on lap 17. That left Leclerc second, 3.5 s behind Antonelli after lap 17. On lap 18 a short Virtual Safety Car came and went, 33 s by the race-control messages, and Antonelli made his stop at the end of that lap, with the field already back at racing speed. His pit-lane time was 23.1 s, one of the quickest of the day. He rejoined fifth, behind the cars still to stop.

The Virtual Safety Car that mattered

Two laps later a second Virtual Safety Car was called, this time for 94 s. Leclerc came in under it, along with his teammate Hamilton, Piastri and others. His pit-lane time, 23.2 s, was almost the same as Antonelli's. The difference was what the rest of the field was doing while he was in the pit lane: running at Virtual Safety Car pace rather than at full speed. Antonelli had been 3.5 s ahead of Leclerc before the stops. After lap 22, with the order settled, he was 2.1 s behind him. That is a swing of 5.6 s, and it came from the timing of the stop, not from the stop itself.

Lap 30 to the flag. Antonelli and Leclerc swap places on lap 34; Hamilton passes Piastri for fourth on lap 40.

Catching up on older hards

Norris, who had started on hards and had not stopped yet, led laps 21 and 22. Leclerc passed him on lap 23 and Antonelli on lap 26. Now it was a straight fight between the two leaders on the same compound, and Antonelli's hards were two laps older. It did not show. Between laps 27 and 33 he was 0.2 to 0.5 s a lap quicker than Leclerc, and the gap fell from 3.0 s after lap 26 to 0.6 s after lap 33. He passed Leclerc during lap 34. After that he pulled away a little, to 2.5 s after lap 42, and the margin at the flag was 1.952 s. Verstappen, sixth after his early stop, worked back to third by lap 29 and finished 11.586 s behind.

From the back of the grid

Two drivers who started near the back finished in the top seven. Hadjar had qualified tenth but started 21st after a grid penalty for power unit changes. He ran hard tyres all race, came into the pits under the opening Safety Car and again on lap 20, was eighth by lap 15 and sixth from lap 31. Norris had qualified third and started 13th after his own power unit penalty. He went 30 laps on his starting hards before switching to mediums, and on the final lap he set the fastest lap of the race, 1:48.890. He finished seventh. Hamilton served his penalty at his lap 20 stop, which took 32.2 s in the pit lane, dropped from second to sixth, and came back to fourth by passing Piastri on lap 40. Pérez and Stroll also retired, on laps 13 and 25.

What decided it

The Virtual Safety Car on lap 20 handed Leclerc a lead he had not built on track. What decided the race was that Antonelli did not need it back from strategy. On hards two laps older than Leclerc's, he made up 2.4 s in seven laps and then passed him. The pass on lap 34 was the only time the lead changed hands between the two on track. After ten rounds, Antonelli leads the championship on 204 points, 45 ahead of Hamilton.
