Shanghai race: Antonelli's first win was built while the Ferraris fought each other

Russell won the sprint, Antonelli took pole and led 55 of 56 laps. His lead over second place grew from 2.1 s to 7.4 s in five laps while Hamilton and Leclerc swapped places, and Russell never got it back below 5 s.

Antonelli won the Chinese Grand Prix by 5.515 s over Russell, with Hamilton third and Leclerc fourth. It was his first Grand Prix win, and at 19 he is the second-youngest winner in our records. A week after Russell beat him in Melbourne, and a day after Russell beat him again in the sprint, he led 55 of the 56 laps. The gap that decided it opened in five laps in the middle of the race, and Antonelli was not the one fighting.

Saturday belonged to Russell

Russell won the sprint from pole, 0.674 s ahead of Leclerc, who came from sixth on the sprint grid. Hamilton was third. Antonelli started the sprint second and finished fifth, 5.688 s behind his teammate. Qualifying for the Grand Prix turned it around: Antonelli took pole in 1:32.064, 0.222 s ahead of Russell, with the two Ferraris on the second row. Only 18 cars took the start on Sunday. Piastri, Norris, Bortoleto and Albon did not start.

A lap behind Hamilton, then in front for good

Hamilton, third on the grid, crossed the line at the end of lap 1 in the lead. Antonelli was back in front at the end of lap 2 and was never headed again. Russell was fourth after the opening lap and second by lap 4, and from there to lap 9 he sat 1.2 to 1.5 s behind his teammate at the line. All four front cars had started on mediums.

A Safety Car that left the front alone

Stroll stopped after nine laps and the Safety Car was deployed about 36 s later. Verstappen, Lawson and Sainz had already pitted under green flags on lap 9, just before it. The leaders all came in together on lap 10 and all took hards, so the order at the front came back out almost unchanged. The cars that had started on hards stayed out: Colapinto ran second and Ocon third behind the Safety Car, and both dropped back within a few laps of the restart.

The restart on lap 14 cost Russell. He was fifth at the end of lap 14 and sixth a lap later, while Hamilton went from fifth to second. Russell was back to fourth on lap 16, but by then both Ferraris were ahead of him. Antonelli led Hamilton by 0.6 s at the end of lap 15.

Two Ferraris, one place

For eight laps Hamilton held second with Leclerc third and Antonelli edged away, to 2.1 s by the end of lap 23. Then the Ferraris started racing each other. Their order at the line changed six times between laps 24 and 40. Over laps 24 to 28 Antonelli averaged 1:36.56 a lap, about a second quicker than either Ferrari, and his lead over second place went from 2.1 s to 7.4 s in those five laps.

Russell was the one who profited from the fight. He came past Hamilton on lap 27 and Leclerc on lap 29. By the time he was second, Antonelli was 7.6 s up the road. Hamilton finished third, 3.6 s ahead of Leclerc, after taking the place for the last time on lap 40.

Russell's 24 laps of chasing

From lap 29 to lap 52 the two Mercedes were almost exactly matched. Antonelli averaged 1:35.81 a lap and Russell 1:35.87, and Antonelli was the quicker of the two on 15 of those 24 laps. The gap moved between 6.3 s and 9.5 s and never closed for good. Antonelli set the fastest lap of the race, 1:35.275, on lap 52. On lap 53 his time was deleted for track limits at Turn 14, and over the last four laps Russell, with nothing to lose, was quicker on three of them and finished his race with his best lap, 1:35.400. The margin at the flag was 5.515 s.

Further back

Bearman came from tenth on the grid to fifth, the best result outside the top two teams, though 57.268 s behind the winner. Gasly was sixth and Lawson, 14th on the grid, seventh. Verstappen started eighth on used softs, pitted under green on lap 9, came from 15th to sixth by lap 22 and ran there until he stopped after 45 laps. Alonso stopped after 32. Ocon was given a 10-second penalty for a collision with Colapinto at Turn 2 and finished 14th. Our data shows the positions and lap times, not what went wrong in the cars that stopped.

What decided it

Antonelli did not win this race with one move. He took the lead back on lap 2, kept it through the Safety Car stops, and then did the simple thing well: he kept lapping at the same pace while the cars behind him lost time to each other. The five laps of Ferrari fighting were worth about five seconds to him, and Russell spent the rest of the race unable to take them back.
