Antonelli can clinch the title in Mexico with a top-nine finish

2026-10-29 · 3 min read

Kimi Antonelli will be crowned world champion at this Sunday's Mexico City GP (1 November) if he finishes in the top nine, whatever happens behind him. His win in the United States GP took him to 365 points, 123 clear of second-placed George Russell, with 125 left to play for. Clinching in Mexico would also break the record for the youngest champion.

The clinching conditions, by finishing position

GPblog and RacingNews365 reach the same conclusion. If anyone other than Russell or Lewis Hamilton wins, Antonelli is champion regardless of his own result. If one of those two wins, the position Antonelli needs changes.

Mexico City GP scenarioWhat Antonelli needs to clinch
Antonelli finishes top nineClinches whatever else happens (GPblog)
Russell winsTop nine (RacingNews365)
Hamilton winsTop ten (RacingNews365)
Finishes tenthClinches unless Russell wins (GPblog)
Scores no pointsClinches as long as neither Russell nor Hamilton wins (GPblog)

Those thresholds assume a tie on points. GPblog notes Antonelli has nine wins, so he would win a tie on countback, and RacingNews365 builds its ninth- and tenth-place cut-offs on the same assumption. ESPN gives the condition as finishing ninth or higher. F1 Oversteer words it differently, saying he must outscore Russell by two points or Hamilton by one; this article follows the table above, where the two main sources agree.

The youngest-champion record is also on the line

RacingNews365 reports that clinching in Mexico would make Antonelli 20 years, 2 months and 7 days old, which is 3 years, 2 months and 4 days younger than Sebastian Vettel's record age of 23 years, 4 months and 11 days. If he misses out, the next chance is the Brazilian GP on 6–8 November.

GPblog also points to another route. If the Qatar or Abu Dhabi GP were cancelled without a replacement, leaving four races, his 123-point lead would put him out of mathematical reach before Mexico is even run. That is GPblog's calculation alone, and both races are on the calendar.
