Baku Qualifying Braces for 65km/h Gusts as Wind Becomes Key Factor

2026-09-24 · 3 min read

Wind has emerged as the biggest weather concern of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, with qualifying on Friday, September 25 forecast to bring the strongest gusts of the three days at the Baku City Circuit. Formula1.com's official forecast puts Friday's average wind at 24.5kph with gusts up to 64.8kph, compared with 17.6kph average and 57.6kph gusts on Thursday's practice, and a calmer 15.5kph average with 43.2kph gusts on Saturday's race day. Because this year's race runs on Saturday for the first time, Friday's qualifying result locks straight into parc fermé conditions for the race, making the wind forecast unusually consequential.

Why It Bites Hardest in Qualifying

Baku's layout alternates tight, wall-lined streets in the old town with exposed stretches along the Caspian Sea, and cars can be pushed off line the moment they exit a sheltered section into open air. Grande Prêmio noted that 'a driver may begin braking with one wind direction and arrive at the corner under a different aerodynamic load if the gust suddenly strengthens.' With narrow corners flanked by walls, that kind of unpredictable movement risks ending a qualifying lap - or a session - against the barriers.

Forecasts Diverge, but the Warning Doesn't

Numbers vary by outlet. Formula1.com's own forecast tops out at 64.8kph for Friday, while Grande Prêmio flagged gusts as high as 70-80km/h. GPFans, by contrast, put Friday's average closer to 8mph (about 13km/h) with gusts above 20mph (about 32km/h), describing conditions as 'easing very slightly' from Thursday. The figures don't line up exactly, but all three sources agree Friday's wind is this weekend's defining weather factor. No rain is forecast, so the track surface itself should stay dry.

Race Day Should Be Calmer

Per Formula1.com's numbers, Saturday's race is set to be the calmest day of the weekend for wind. But if a team gets caught out in Friday's gusts, the fallout could carry straight through to Saturday's grid. On a tight street track where every grid slot matters for overtaking chances, this Friday's qualifying session looks set to matter more than usual.
