Norris wins Hungarian GP from pole, 15.080s clear of Verstappen

Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring (70 laps) on 26 July, converting pole position into victory. Max Verstappen finished second, 15.080s behind, and Kimi Antonelli third, 18.728s back, while McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri retired late on. The race turned on a collision between Piastri and Carlos Sainz and the pit-stop timing that followed.

From pole to the win

According to Lapchive's qualifying table, Norris took pole with a 1:17.207 in Q3, with Lewis Hamilton 0.012s behind (1:17.219). Hamilton, however, was given a three-place grid drop for unnecessarily impeding Piastri and started fifth. Antonelli qualified fourth but received a three-place drop and one penalty point for not slowing sufficiently under single yellow flags, and started seventh.

PlanetF1 reported that McLaren gave Piastri, as the lead car on track, priority for the first pit stop, despite Norris's plea to pit. Piastri then collided with Sainz's Williams while passing through traffic, and PlanetF1 said that let Norris pit and take the net lead. Silverstone reported that Norris pitted on lap 39 and passed Antonelli, who had yet to stop, for the lead on lap 46. Piastri later retired with a gearbox failure (PlanetF1). The retirement lap differs between sources: Lapchive says lap 55, Silverstone lap 56.

A virtual safety car followed Piastri's stop, and Norris made his final stop under it, Silverstone said. Lapchive records no safety car and one VSC. The Race described the win as Norris's first grand prix victory of his title defence, and Lapchive lists it as his 12th career win.
