Hamilton gets 5s for jump start but only a reprimand for yellow flag at British GP

British GP stewards gave Lewis Hamilton a five-second time penalty during the race, but after the flag they closed a yellow-flag investigation with only a reprimand, and he kept third place. Kimi Antonelli had five seconds added after the race and is classified 15th, and Williams' Carlos Sainz received a one-lap penalty for overtaking the Safety Car.

Hamilton: five seconds for the start, a reprimand for the yellow

According to RacingNews365, Hamilton started third, passed pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli and was running second when he was given five seconds for moving before the start signal. The penalty was to be served at his next pit stop; Lapchive logs it as issued on lap 7 and served on lap 23.

After the race he was investigated again over a lap 38 yellow flag. Lapchive records that he failed to slow for a single yellow at Turn 9, and RacingNews365 explains that Nico Hülkenberg had stopped on track with a gearbox failure. The stewards weighed that Hamilton entered the sector before any yellow was shown and that the yellow on his steering-wheel display appeared only near the end of the zone. They also accepted that he was defending against a counter-attack from Max Verstappen. Even so, they found he "did not make a discernible reduction of speed and therefore did not fully comply with the requirements applicable under a single yellow flag", and decided a reprimand was the appropriate penalty. Lapchive lists it as his first reprimand of the season.

The stakes were high. Crash.net wrote that a five-second penalty on top of the race penalty could drop him out of the points entirely, with the field bunched by the late Safety Car.

Antonelli, Sainz, Albon and Stroll

  • Antonelli: a five-second penalty after the race for leaving the track at Turn 6 on lap 44. Crash.net says he crossed the line ninth on track and was moved to 15th. The official page does not say whether the +8.005s already includes the five seconds.
  • Sainz: one penalty lap for overtaking the Safety Car after "lapped cars may now overtake" was displayed (Article B5.13.4c); he is classified 17th. Crash.net does not apply it and shows him 12th.
  • Alexander Albon: ten seconds for the opening-phase collision. Lapchive says it was with Oliver Bearman at Turn 6.
  • Lance Stroll: three five-second track-limits penalties, all served on lap 46. The Lapchive page itself shows that the lap numbers in the list and in the reasons do not match.

In qualifying, Pierre Gasly was given a three-place grid drop for impeding Stroll, according to Lapchive. Final order and points follow the official result with these decisions applied; Hamilton's reprimand was settled at a stewards' hearing shortly after the podium celebrations.
