Cadillac announced on Wednesday 28 October that it has extended Sergio Perez's contract to at least 2029. The newest team on the grid, still pointless after 18 rounds, has chosen to show long-term faith in its driver just days before his home race.
What was announced
According to Formula1.com, Cadillac confirmed on Wednesday, ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix, that Perez will stay with the team until at least 2029. Perez said joining Cadillac from day one was "a project I truly believed in", adding that building a team takes time and patience. He said he is "fully committed for the next three years" and thanked Dan Towriss, Mark Reuss, TWG Motorsports and General Motors.
Towriss said building a competitive F1 team is a long-term journey and that Perez's talent and leadership give the team the continuity it needs. Sky Sports quoted Towriss as saying "Checo will remain an integral part of Cadillac Formula 1 team for years to come".
What changes
Sky Sports reported that Perez's previous deal was understood to expire at the end of 2027, so the extension adds two years. Both outlets say only "until at least 2029" and neither gives an exact end point, so it is not confirmed whether the deal ends after the 2029 season or runs beyond it.
The results sit in contrast to the commitment. Formula1.com said Perez and Cadillac have not yet scored a point in 2026, though the team has steadily improved through the season. Sky Sports noted that he is last in the drivers' standings but has outperformed team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
This weekend and Bottas
Perez makes his 300th grand prix start in Mexico City this Sunday, 1 November. Formula1.com pointed out that Cadillac is the newest team on the grid and that reaching Q2 would be a big achievement. Sky Sports says he is the third most experienced driver on the grid behind Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. Formula1.com notes he has six grand prix wins and has driven for Sauber, McLaren, Force India, Racing Point and Red Bull.
Reports differ on Bottas's 2027 situation. Sky Sports said his contract reportedly runs to the end of 2027, while GPblog wrote that he is still waiting to learn his F1 future. The announcement itself does not mention Bottas.
What to watch
First practice (FP1) in Mexico starts at 12:30 local time (18:30 UTC) on Friday 30 October. Colton Herta is reported to run for Cadillac in that session, so Perez's home 300th weekend gets going properly in FP2.
