From the start to the Safety Car

According to Silverstone's official report, the two Ferraris beat pole-sitter Antonelli off the line. Leclerc took the lead with Hamilton second, while Antonelli held third and kept Russell from pressing into Brooklands. On lap 11 Antonelli passed Hamilton on the inside at Copse to take second.

Hamilton had been given a five-second time penalty for moving before the start signal, and served it at his pit stop (lap 23 on Lapchive). A Virtual Safety Car was also called during the race, and right after it Antonelli suffered a wheel shield failure that brought him into the pits several times. Mercedes deputy technical director Simone Resta described it, as quoted by Crash.net, as a failure of the wheel shield part of the front brake duct.

The last turning point was a late Safety Car. Silverstone's report says Max Verstappen stopped in the gravel at Stowe, and while both Ferraris pitted, Russell stayed out and moved ahead of Hamilton into second. RacingNews365 likewise writes that Hamilton pitted under the Safety Car and fell behind Russell. Lapchive logs Safety Car periods at laps 48 and 51.

Antonelli received a five-second penalty after the race for exceeding track limits and is classified 15th (+8.005s). The official results page does not say whether that +8.005s already includes the five seconds. The fastest lap of the race was Antonelli's 1:31.777 on lap 37.

A 25-point championship gap

Crash.net's standings after Round 9 read Antonelli 179 points, Russell 154 and Hamilton 147. With Antonelli scoreless, Russell closed to within 25 points. Leclerc is fourth on 108.

The sources do not fully agree. Silverstone's report places Verstappen's stop on lap 48, while the classification lists him as 20th with 46 laps completed. Crash.net also shows Williams' Carlos Sainz 12th, 4.391s behind, while the official result drops him to 17th for a Safety Car overtaking penalty lap. That decision is covered in a separate piece.
