Lando Norris (McLaren) converted pole position into victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, round 12 of the 2026 season, at Zandvoort on 23 August. According to Lapchive he covered the 72 laps in 2:04:44.859, with Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) second at +11.536s and George Russell (Mercedes) third at +15.906s. Home hero Max Verstappen (Red Bull) crashed on the opening lap without completing a single tour, and the race was red-flagged.
Lap-one red flag: Verstappen crashes at the final corner
Pit Debrief reports that Verstappen ran onto the grass after going wheel-to-wheel with Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), rejoined, fought with Liam Lawson, and then lost the car in the banked final corner, still wet in the last sector, hitting the barriers. He was unhurt but the car was heavily damaged, and he said: "I got caught out." Plenty of debris brought out the red flag, and Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto were investigated for overtaking under double yellows through the crash area. The sources do not give the length of the stoppage or the restart time.
Pit Debrief also says Oliver Bearman's (Haas) engine failed on the formation lap, so a second formation lap was needed, and the race got going again on lap 5. Lapchive lists no safety cars and two virtual safety cars, on laps 55 and 70, with air and track temperatures averaging 19C and 32C and the conditions labelled wet.
Classification and the fight for the lead
| Pos | Driver | Team | Grid | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Norris | McLaren | 1 | 2:04:44.859 |
| 2 | Antonelli | Mercedes | 3 | +11.536 |
| 3 | Russell | Mercedes | 2 | +15.906 |
| 4 | Hamilton | Ferrari | 5 | +16.755 |
| 5 | Leclerc (fastest lap) | Ferrari | 6 | +17.258 |
| 6 | Piastri | McLaren | 4 | +32.332 |
Pit Debrief says Norris led for most of the afternoon. Antonelli was briefly in front at the restart, Norris handed the lead to Hamilton briefly during his stop, and he passed Antonelli ahead of Turn 11 around laps 54 to 55. Hamilton passed Piastri into Turn 1 and finished fourth, while Charles Leclerc, who had held Hamilton up on the medium tyre, took fifth. By Lapchive's timing the fastest lap was Leclerc's 1:14.230 on lap 60.
Late drama: Sainz and Albon collide
Pit Debrief reports that in the closing laps Carlos Sainz (Williams) had a big lock-up and hit team-mate Alexander Albon, earning a 10-second penalty. Albon stopped on lap 66 but was still classified 17th. Esteban Ocon stopped on the inside of Turn 3 on lap 55, which caused the first VSC. Lapchive counts five retirements: Verstappen, Bearman, Lance Stroll, Ocon and Valtteri Bottas. Pit Debrief adds Albon for six DNFs, so the two sources differ. The stewards' decisions are covered in a separate article.
