Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid, just under four seconds ahead of his teammate Russell, with Verstappen almost 15 seconds back in third. Gasly started on pole and led the first lap. A Safety Car and a red flag stopped the race on lap 3, and it restarted from a standing start with 48 laps to run. Leclerc, third on the grid, lasted one lap; Alonso and Stroll also retired.

Russell's race to lose
By the numbers this was Russell's race. He took the lead on lap 2 and was in front at the end of 40 of the 53 laps. His last stop came during the red flag, and he ran the remaining 50 laps on one set of hards. He lost the lead three times: once to Verstappen, on laps 12 to 14, and twice to his own teammate.
From 19th to the front
Antonelli was 14th after one lap, 12th when the red flag came out and eighth after the first lap of the restart. He passed Verstappen and then Russell and led at the end of lap 18. By our count: 26 on-track overtakes. Then the climb stalled. Russell took the lead back on lap 23, and for the next five laps Antonelli sat 0.4 to 0.7 s behind him without a way past.
The turning point: a VSC on lap 28
A Virtual Safety Car on lap 28 made a stop cheaper than under green. Seven cars took it, Antonelli and Verstappen among them. Russell stayed out. Mercedes split: Antonelli went to a second set of mediums, Russell kept his hards.
The stop was not free. At the end of lap 27 Antonelli was second, 0.531 s behind Russell. Two laps later he was sixth, 14.374 s behind. One question remained: could fresh mediums win back 14 seconds on 25 laps?
Buying it back
They could, with five laps to spare. Antonelli was fourth by lap 31 and second by lap 37. At the end of lap 48 the gap to Russell was 0.236 s, so 14.1 s had gone in 19 laps, about 0.74 s a lap, and the gap fell on every one of them. On lap 49 he ran off at Turn 1 while fighting Russell. On lap 50 he took the lead and kept it. His fastest lap of the race came on the last lap, 1:23.504 on a 25-lap-old medium. Over the 46 clean laps both ran, Antonelli was quicker on 34, by 0.47 s a lap on average.
The same VSC stop did not work for everyone. Verstappen also stopped, dropped from third to seventh and was back in third by lap 39: net zero. At Audi, Hülkenberg stopped twice and was faster than Bortoleto on 32 of 45 clean laps, yet finished 12th to Bortoleto's 11th. A cheap stop still costs track position. It only pays when the car has enough pace in hand to win it back, and on Sunday only Antonelli's did.
What it means

The win is Antonelli's seventh in 13 rounds. He leaves Monza on 267 points, 66 clear of Russell on 201, with Hamilton third on 191 and ten rounds to go. Mercedes leads the constructors' table by 122 points.
